On This Week in Memphis History

Memphis Pyramid Opens

November 9, 1991

The Memphis Pyramid’s doors first opened on November 9, 1991, changing the city skyline with its distinct, mirrored form rising by the river.

Conceived as a sports and entertainment arena, the Pyramid hosted everything from basketball to world-famous concerts. Its striking architecture quickly became a Memphis icon and point of city pride. After over a decade of historic events, from Phish and Grateful Dead shows, to epic basketball games by both the Tiger’s and Grizzlies, the Pyramid went vacant once the FedEx Forum arose across Beale St. The big question remianed: “What should we do with the Pyramid?” The city froze in analysis paralysis for far too long, with people arguing about its future:

“It should be an aquarium!”
“No, a Casino!”
“How about a hotel?”
“Let’s make it a museum!”

Eventually, the Bass Pro Shop swooped in to occupy the pyramid, and turn it back into a city attraction! While people aren’t 100% happy, saying there were better options available, the Pyramid is now a wonderful attraction for Memphians and tourists alike!

It’s legacy as a symbol of Memphis ambition and innovation endures. Stay tuned for a full article about the impacts the Pyramid has had on our city!
