New Tom Lee Museum & slave market memorial receives funding

The former home of Tom Lee in the Klondike neighborhood will be opened as a museum. It’s a tribute to the role he played in his own community and “the countless people who shaped him and the rest of that Black neighborhood, the first one to be incorporated in our city.” Also, Calvary Episcopal Church will build a public memorial to the 3,800 Black people sold as slaves at the market, which is owned by Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Ten public history projects were selected from more than 750 entires with Memphis being the only city with two winners.

Tennessee named its 2022-23 top schools. 34 Memphis ones made the cut

Each year, the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) releases its annual school and district designations. Overall, Memphis-Shelby County Schools received a “satisfactory” designation, a step down from last year’s “advancing” designation. However, 34 schools — or about 8.5% of the 400 schools — received “reward” status as one of the top schools in the state.

Memphis Zoo could be first city building to receive solar panels

With the city’s goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions in government buildings by 55% over the next decade, the addition of solar panels added to the Memphis Zoo would be a major development. The Memphis Zoo is one of the most energy-consuming city buildings and this $527,000 grant could offset its consumption by the end of 2025. Learn more here.*
