Former Memphis Grizzlies player launches new movie set in Memphis

A film written and produced by former Memphis Grizzlies player Jarnell Stokes is set to begin filming in Memphis later this year in March. As Stokes’ first screenplay, “Break the Cycle” will star Cuba Gooding Jr., Vivica A. Fox, Vernon Davis, and Quinton Jackson.

The South Wind High School graduate said that the film is a “heart-pounding journey through the world of streetball that explores themes of family, ambition, and the moral complexities of urban life.” I don’t know about you, but we can’t wait to check out another movie filmed and based in Memphis from a Memphis native.

Best of Memphis

🍳 And the winner for Best Breakfast is…

Not so soon, before we announce the winner… how did we get here?

In March Madness fashion, we launched a bracket on our IG of the 16 best breakfast restaurants in Memphis to decide once and for all: what is the best breakfast spot in town?

Here’s a round-by-round recap of the tournament because this bracket was too much fun (but first, check out all 16 incredible restaurants here):

In the first round, as exciting as any Round of 64 in NCAA’s March Madness, we watched a Cinderella story unfold with 10-seed Staks Kitchen winning against Another Broken Egg handedly in the end — with voters showcasing their allegiance to Staks, a local Memphis restaurant. 11-seed Bob Barksdale’s nearly pulled out the upset against 6-seed Hive, but the new bagel restaurant Hive pulled out a narrow victory, taking a lead towards the end of voting.

Meanwhile, 12-seed Kinfolk, a newer Memphis restaurant on the scene, performed extremely well in voting all day, but couldn’t pull out a victory against the institutional behemoth that is 5-seed Arcade. And don’t look now but the Memphis staples of 3-seed Brother Juniper’s and 1-seed Sunrise showcased their immense popularity in the first round, with the most votes at 701 and 669, respectively.

Entering the Second round, the top-seeded restaurants rose to the occasion this time with zero upsets. There was no cinderella story as Staks Kitchen, a first-round fan favorite, fell to another Memphis institution that is Bryant’s Breakfast. Downtown staple Arcade won against Big Bad Breakfast, while Brother Juniper’s and Sunrise had the most votes this round, ultimately beating their competition against two incredible Memphis restaurants — Hive and The Liquor Store.

In the Final Four showdown — Sunrise vs. Arcade and Bryant’s vs. Brother Juniper’s — we got to see the best of the best showcase why they should be the best breakfast in town. It was a long day with votes going back and forth between the four best breakfast restaurants in town. Who would make it to the prized championship? But once again, Sunrise and Brother Juniper’s saw the most votes go their way, waving goodbye to the Arcade and Bryant’s.

For the championship round, Sunrise and Brother Juniper’s battled it out neck-and-neck all day long. Back and forth the votes went, but ultimately only one institution could claim the top spot in the 901…

With 831 votes, SUNRISE won the #1 breakfast place in the city, voted on by the people, as Brother Juniper’s finished just short with 746 votes.

A huge Congrats to Sunrise and ALL of these breakfast restaurants! With some friendly competition along the way, every place was a worthy contender.

Make sure you check out our Google list of the Best Breakfast in Memphis. And save it to your phone to cross off trying every breakfast joint in town.

🤫 Stay tuned because next week, we’ll be announcing a few lucky newsletter subscribers to win gift cards to Sunrise.
